DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ANIMATED SERIES
CHARACTER RE-DESIGNS
The Friends
Of all the passion projects on Neverwinter, I feel my most defining pursuit was getting the characters from the 1980's Dungeon & Dragons animated series in the game as companions.
My low-key master plan was to release a module that would finally bring the unfinished Dungeons & Dragons story to a close. However, the scope of the module was too large so I dropped assets in the schedule wherever I could in hopes that in a couple of years we would have "pre-created" enough content to release one or two modules that would do the story justice.
HANK THE RANGER

The Friends were aged about 10 years and their costumes updated.
With Hank it was a bit of an issue to NOT make him look like Tanis from Dragonlance.
DIANA THE ACROBAT

It was great when we could include little elements in the designs that tied directly back to specific episodes of the animated series.
In the episode,"Child of the Stargazer", Diana becomes a goddess only to give up that power to save someone's life. The tattoos on Diana show her status as a Child of a Stargazer. I would have loved to revisit that story line.
ERIC THE CAVALIER

As an adult I now realize that Eric is the character I most relate to. I respect that he alone saw through Dungeon Master's B.S.
SHEILA THE THIEF

I originally wanted to go straight up goth with Sheila's re-design but decided to pull back a bit right before we started the concept art. That was probably a good idea because the feedback we got back was to remove her black lipstick, which was the little bit of goth we kept. You can still see some of the dark eyeliner, though.
PRESTO THE MAGICIAN

I wanted to do something with Presto that played into his ability to pull something from our earth while at the same time celebrating the 80's but was having trouble coming up with good ideas. My kid came into my office at this time and I asked him, "What do you think about when you think of the 1980's"?
He immediately said, "Fanny Pack" and then left the room.
BOBBY THE BARBARIAN

Like Diana we were able to slip in a cool reference to a specific story-line from the series. In Bobby's case it is the locket from " The Girl Who Dreamed Tomorrow".
UNI THE UNICORN

Uni's barding intentionally matches Bobby's armor design. You will also notice that Bobby's shoulder tattoo is of a unicorn. Even after 10 years they are still inseparable.
